CHAPTER SIX

Travis was doing everything he could to keep it together for Tina, but inside he hurt more than he wanted to admit. He’d gone into the basement to see if anything was salvageable, but instead found everything floating in almost two feet of water. Large cracks had formed in the concrete, and water was rushing in. Everything he’d built with Maria was gone. The insurance he had wouldn’t cover this much rebuilding. Even if the building didn’t collapse, it would probably be unlivable when it came down to it. He stumbled up the stairs and closed himself in one of the exam rooms, needing to pull himself together. Travis choked back a sob, then tried to wipe his face off when he heard the door open.

“You okay, Trav?”

Bear’s voice. Travis didn’t want Bear to see him like this either.

“Yeah, right as…well, rain, I guess.”

Bear moved closer, a wan smile on his face. “The expression on your face when I came in wouldn’t even fool Tina. Talk to me.”

The hurt and anger found a target in Bear, and despite the fact he didn’t want to, Travis couldn’t help himself.

“I’m fine,” he snapped. “I’m not fucking made of glass, okay? I’m a goddamn man, and I can face my problems. I’m not a little girl that has to go running to someone because they got their feelings hurt.”

Bear was quiet for a few moments, and Travis was afraid he’d turn and walk out. He’d deserve it, he knew, but right now he just couldn’t seem to care. He wasn’t expecting Bear to step closer and grin at him. The damned man was amused, and obviously keeping his voice low. “You know as well as I do that Tina would kick your ass if she heard you talking like that. What’s wrong with needing someone? Your daughter is one of the strongest kids I ever met, but she needs you. It’s okay for you to let me in.”

And despite his best effort, the dam burst. The tears that Travis had been unsuccessful at holding in came bursting out. “I’m going to lose it all. Tina’s home. Our life. It’s all for shit now.” Travis wiped a sleeve over his nose. “Even if we were able to bounce back, the town won’t. Most of the farmers around here were hanging on by their fingernails. This is going to push them over the edge, force them to sell to some realtor for pennies on the dollar, because that’s all this land is worth. These people have been here for generations, and have been goddamn lucky that they’ve never had a hurricane or tornado. Now? They’ll pack up and move somewhere else. No one will need a vet…won’t need me.”

Travis threw himself into Bear’s arms, hiccupping when he couldn’t catch a breath.

“When you let it out, you don’t fool around, do you?”

Travis pulled back and stifled a laugh, cuffing Bear on the arm. “Bastard. No fair ruining a perfectly good snit.”

“You can snit after we save this place.
